When to call rather than wait

If you are asking the question, call.

Nobody here minds a call that turns out to be nothing. The calls we would rather avoid are the ones that waited three days.

01

Pain that keeps you awake

Especially pain that lingers after something hot or cold.

Sensitivity and pain are often the first indications that an infection has reached the pulp of a tooth. Treated early, the tooth is usually kept.

02

Swelling, or a lump on the gum

A spreading infection can cause small pockets of pus to develop.

Which can lead to an abscess. This is the point at which a dental problem stops being only a dental problem, and it is not one to sit on.

03

A broken tooth or a lost restoration

A traumatic injury can compromise the pulp in the same way decay does.

Keep any piece you have, and call. A tooth that is dealt with the same day often needs far less than one that is dealt with next week.

This page is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for being seen. If you have facial swelling that is spreading, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or an injury from an accident, treat it as a medical emergency and go to an emergency room.
